Australia was one of the first nations to join the Coalition force formed by the United Nations Security Council. Over 1,800 personnel from the Australian Defence Force consisting Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force were deployed in the Gulf War.
Australia was involved in the blockade operation in the Persian Gulf and Operation Desert shield and Desert Storm. Australia has contributed vessels including *HMAS Success, HMAS Sydney, HMAS Adelaide, HMAS Brisbane and HMAS Darwin. Australia has also provided two Oliver Hazard Class frigates, four medical teams, a mine clearance diving team and Defence Intelligence Organisation personnel.
The battles that Australia was involved in were relatively uneventful and therefore at the end of the war, there were no casualties in the Australian Defence Force.
